Every year, the Jackson Center for Creative Writing at Hollins University hosts a reading series featuring nationally acclaimed authors. All events are FREE and open to the public. Pauline Kaldas will kick off the series with a reading on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 4:30 PM, followed by a Q&A on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Both events will take place at the Wyndham Robertson Library. Kaldas is an associate professor of English and creative writing at Hollins University and her publications include The Time between Places: Stories That Weave In and Out of Egypt and America and Dinarzad’s Children: An Anthology of Contemporary Arab American Fiction. She also received the Silver Award for Dinarzad’s Children (ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards) and the RAWI Creative Prose Award.
Matthew Shenoda will finish up February’s events with a reading on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 8:15 PM in the Green Drawing Room of the Main Building, and a Q&A on Friday, February 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Wyndham Robertson Library. Shenoda is a writer and professor who has been nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize. His debut collection of poems, Somewhere Else, was named one of 2005’s debut books of the year by Poets & Writers and won a 2006 American Book Award.
On Thursday, March 15, 2018, Aldon Lynn Nielsen will give his lecture “Terms of Address: Amiri Baraka’s Six Persons” at 8:15 PM in the Wyndham Robertson Library. Nielsen is the author of five volumes of verse and was the first winner of the Larry Neal Award for poetry. His poetry was selected for the Best American Poems anthology and has received two Gertrude Stein Awards for innovation. His first volume of literary criticism, Reading Race, won the SAMLA Studies Prize and his Integral Music won the Josephine Miles Award.

The Hollins Literary Festival will take place Saturday, April 7, 2018. The festival will feature a poetry panel, and readings by Jim Minick (11:30 AM), Cynthia Manick (2:00 PM), and Janisse Ray (3:15 PM). All events will be held in the Wetherill Visual Arts Center Auditorium (Room 200).
Jim Minick is the author of five books, including the novel Fire Is Your Water and The Blueberry Years: A Memoir of Farm and Family, winner of the SIBA Best Nonfiction Book of the Year Award. He’s also written a collection of essays and two books of poetry.
The author of Blue Hallelujahs, Cynthia Manick is a Pushcart Prize-nominated poet with an MFA in creative writing from the New School. She is a winner of the 2016 Lascaux Prize in Collected Poetry and a 2017 recipient of the Barbara Memorial Fund Award for Poetry.
A writer, naturalist, and activist, Janisse Ray is the author of six books, including Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, a New York Times Notable Book that was as chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read. The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution to Save Food won the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature Award.
C.E. Morgan will give a reading on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 8:15 PM, as well as a Q&A on Friday, April 20, 2018. Morgan will also be hosting a Creative Hands-On Event for Hollins Students on Friday, April 20, 2018, at 2:00 PM. All events take place in the Wyndham Robertson Library. Morgan was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel The Sport of Kings, winner of the 2016 Kirkus Prize and Windham-Campbell Literature Prize. She is also a recipient of the National Book Foundation’s “5 under 35” award, a Lannan Literary Fellowship, a United States Artists Fellow award, and a Whiting Writers’ Award.
The reading series will conclude with a farewell reading by Hollins seniors and graduating MFA students on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 8:15 PM in the Green Drawing Room of the Main Building.
