A Gathering for Members & Friends of the VCB Book Arts Program
What’s a wayzgoose?
A print shop holiday! Back in the day (17thc. England), master printers gave a feast or other “entertainment” for their workers on or about St. Bartholomew’s Day (August 24). The event marked the season of diminishing daylight when printers went back to work by candlelight. Over time, the wayzgoose became an annual summer celebration that employees of a printing establishment organized themselves. Nowadays, it’s a summer gathering of printers and bookmakers. Sometimes it involves a shop clean-up or workday project, sometimes an exhibit or presentation, but always food and libation.
We missed gathering in The Year of Covid, so we want our 2021 wayzgoose to be both productive and celebratory while still taking some precautions. Here’s the plan: we’re recruiting a small number of experienced bookbinders for a studio project early in the day, then coming together en masse outdoors on the Jefferson School patio for a potluck supper to kick off a new season of classes, projects, and programs.
1-3:30 – Bookbinding Demos
Drop-in bookbinding demos! We’re showing a method to take an existing book and rebind it with a new cover cloth. We’ll create new case bindings for 20 book blocks. No sewing, just gluing down and pasting in. It is part of a donor recognition project for Virginia Humanities in its new office space.
3:30 – Show-and-Tell / 25th Anniversary Book Art
Share your work-in-progress on new interpretations of past member collaborations. The final work will be exhibited at the new headquarters of Virginia Humanities this fall.
4:30 – Potluck Supper – Outside on the Patio
Mingle and munch with old Book Arts friends and meet new members. VCB will provide main dishes (Pearl Island barbeque and tofu curry) and beverages. You all contribute the starters, sides, and desserts. To avoid too much of any one of a good thing –
- If your last name begins with A-I, please bring an appetizer.
- If your last name begins with J-Q, please bring a side or salad.
- If your last name begins with R-Z, please bring dessert.
Register if you plan to attend the potluck. It’s free, but pre-registration is required.
COVID Vaccination & Masking Policy:
It is the Virginia Center for the Book’s expectation that all program participants will be fully vaccinated.
As of 08/05/21, it appears that all attending our indoor activities will need to be masked in accordance with evolving CDC guidelines.
We are intending to hold our 4:30 pot-luck meal outdoors (on the patio) where masking may be optional.
Should public health guidelines change, and new norms be applicable, we reserve the right to revisit the expectations in the interest of participant health and safety.
